Troy Farlow (D) outlined his positive agenda to move our community forward during last night's Yorktown Chamber of Commerce debate. His positions differ greatly from the extreme views of his opponent Brenda Pogge on a number of issues, including healthcare, education, environmental protection, immigration, and reproductive choice.
Ms. Pogge is against the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), which will allow Virginia to provide health insurance to children of low-income families up to age 19, who are not currently insured. Additionally, the program places in the hands of the state the privilege of deciding on services and setting eligibility guidelines. Mr. Farlow sees it as imperative that we make public healthcare available to children whose parents are without the ways and means to afford it privately. Mr. Farlow regards our children as our community's greatest resource and supports all efforts to provide them with every possible opportunity to succeed.
“Ms. Pogge is clearly out of touch with reality, as further evidenced by her remarks in the Virginia Gazette on 10/17/2007, that public pre-school is unnecessary, because of her mistaken presumption that all children have a parent that can afford to stay home,” stated Farlow. “The economic case for expanding pre-K education for four-year-olds is overwhelming. In addition to other evidence, a Federal Reserve study shows that investment in quality pre-school can result in a return on investment of up to 16% annually. The governor’s initiative and subsequent incremental investments are only common sense.”
Mr. Farlow stated that he respects the threat posed by global warming and will work to end offshore drilling and encourage the use of renewable energy sources. Despite the current crisis affecting our planet, Ms. Pogge stated on 10/17/2007 that she did not believe that global warming existed. Mr. Farlow is endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters and the Sierra Club.
Ms. Pogge has printed in her written material her intent to punish local businesses who hire undocumented workers. Mr. Farlow plans to help local businesses by giving them the resources to validate an employee's citizenship. Mr. Farlow also plans to sponsor workshops to teach local employers how to identify falsified documents.
As a testament to Ms. Pogge's extremism, she stands against a woman's right to terminate a pregnancy in the cases of the crimes of rape and incest. Mr. Farlow supports expanding women’s access to all reproductive education and healthcare options.
"The Yorktown Chamber provided an important service to the community by hosting this debate and giving voters the opportunity to ask questions of the candidates that are running. Ms. Pogge should have attended. Her absence is particularly circumspect in light of the recent fiasco involving campaign mailings on her behalf that she claims not to have seen."
Troy Farlow is a native Virginian. He received a B.S. in Accounting from Elon College and worked for Price Waterhouse Coopers while pursuing an MBA at Duke University. Within days of 9/11, Farlow left his job and the MBA program to volunteer and then work for a small investment firm in New York City which had lost more than half of its employees. He returned to Virginia, began a small business and married Laura Kerbin, an oncologist.
