Dr. Laura Kerbin Farlow was born and raised on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, the daughter of a newspaper editor and a teacher. Throughout her life, Laura has demonstrated a strong interest in medicine and science, first gaining experience by volunteering in a hospital and a hospice in high school and eventually studying chemistry at Washington College.
Between graduation and medical school, Laura took time off to gain more life experience, teaching high school chemistry and physics in Onley and Dublin, Virginia. The experience helped prepare her not only for the rigors of teaching students during her residency in internal medicine but also the challenges of helping patients better understand their illnesses and make the best choices about treatments.
After two years of teaching, Laura entered Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) to pursue her life long goal of becoming a physician. She served her residency in internal medicine at EVMS and trained in oncology at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. Laura had been interested in oncology since childhood after she witnessed her grandmother battle ovarian cancer.
Laura returned to the Eastern Shore in 1999 and practiced for five and a half years in Nassawadox. During that time, she met Troy, and after three and a half years of courtship, the couple married on November 18, 2006 in front of a small gathering of family and friends at Grace Episcopal Church in Yorktown.
Today, Laura serves as a medical oncologist with the Peninsula Cancer Institute, a community faculty member of internal medicine at EVMS, and the Medical Director of the Sentara Hospice in Williamsburg. Laura is also active in her faith life; the couple regularly attends Grace Episcopal Church and Laura formerly served on the Executive Board of the Diocese of Southern Virginia. Laura and Troy live in the Queens Lake area of York County with their cocker spaniel Casey.
